Candlelight Conversations Volume 12: Ashlan Wickstrom
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU! WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I’ll first introduce myself as the content writer for Kintsugi Candle Co. For the past 10 months I’ve had the pleasure of (virtually) meeting and sharing the stories of so many wonderful humans on this blog. I am definitely passionate about many things! I love to travel, compete in local triathlons, practice photography, spend time near any body of water, learn new hobbies and promote agriculture! I grew up on a dairy farm in a small town in central California, college took me to Texas then Ohio before finally returning home to California this April after 8 years. Agriculture is a big part of who I am and I love to teach other millenials about an industry that is quite literally tied to every part of their daily life. At the end of the day though, I just love sharing stories and crafting content - in writing, photo, video, or any other form - that resonates with people!
WE BELIEVE THAT JUST LIKE BROKEN POTTERY PUT BACK TOGETHER WITH GOLD, WE ARE MADE WHOLE AGAIN IN SPITE OF OUR TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS AND ARE MORE BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE HAVING BEEN BROKEN. WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR KINTSUGI STORY!
I am truly grateful that in my 26 years I haven’t had to navigate a life-altering experience that has completely shifted my life course. I know many people, and have met many through this blog, that have endured more in their life than most. What I do have though, is a collection of good, bad and ugly life moments that have shaped who I am over time. There have been situations that made me question my value and self-worth, times where I felt alone or like nobody understood my circumstances, and chapters where it seemed like there was no end in sight to the most trying moments. I live life with the mindset that tomorrow is never promised, I try to make the most of every day and every experience because you never know what tomorrow has in store for you or your loved ones.
…at our very core we all carry a sense of where we come from and what makes us who we are today.
SHARING YOUR STORY AND OWNING YOUR TRUTH IS SO IMPORTANT! HOW DO YOU PROMOTE AUTHENTICITY?
Moving away from my family and around the country throughout my young adult life taught me a lot about staying true to who I am no matter where I go. We can try to fit in with the people and the environment around us, but at our very core we all carry a sense of where we come from and what makes us who we are today. I try to promote authenticity by following the example my parents set for me growing up, through my work in communications creating and sharing messages, and by acting in ways that align with my beliefs and values. I try my best to have an open and understanding mind so that others feel comfortable and confident being their authentic self around me!
HOW DO YOU PRACTICE SELF-CARE AND SELF-LOVE?
Staying active is a biggie for me, having a consistent workout schedule gives me a daily space to either tune in when I need to process something, or check out when life gets overwhelming and busy. Spending time outside or traveling somewhere new is another way I make sure to give myself some room to breathe. I definitely lean toward the introverted side but I work at home so there are days where it’s just me, my dog and my computer for hours. At the end of the work day all I want to do is go outside and pick some flowers or go for a walk. This year I also made it a goal to treat myself to more mani-pedi’s, getting my nails done is one of my favorite things and what better way to relax and rest?!
NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE ARE BIG PROPONENTS OF AROMATHERAPY. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SCENTS?
I really like earthy scents, nothing too floral or too sweet. Sandalwood, “boy” scented candles (you know the ones), balsam at Christmas time.
YOUR STORY IS ONE THAT PERSONIFIES COURAGE AND RESILIENCE. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHERS WHO ARE THRIVING TO OVERCOME AN OBSTACLE OR FIND BEAUTY IN THEIR BROKENNESS?
I always tell myself that God has a plan, even when it seems like things are not going your way or the negatives just keep piling up. Knowing that I’m not always in control gives me confidence that there is someone else who has a plan bigger than I have for myself (and I make big plans). Being able to talk about how you’re feeling and express your struggles to someone else is very important; whether it’s a friend, family member, significant other or someone else, just saying it out loud can take a great weight off of your shoulders.
